The article is devoted to the poetics of odor (olfactory fragments) in the travelogue - the travel notes and diaries of the XVIII century. The author shows how the story is provoked by a situation (the author-hero is in alien space). This situation determines the conditions for olfactory reactions and the development of the olfactory poetics. The author of the article proves that the boundary area of literature and anthropology is the key of the genre of the travelogue. This feature is expressed in the double challenge that comes from the work itself - the description of the alien space: the need for truthful fact entering and expression of one's attitude to these facts. Olfactory fragments are exposed to this challenge: in the alien space smells are inverted and distorted, while orientation for them is difficult but needed.
