Tibiofibular syndesmosis is one of the most important stability issues of the talocrural joint. Most commonly tibiofibular syndesmosis becomes damaged in cases of pronation-external rotational mechanism of the malleolar fracture. The issues on the necessity of stabilizing the tibiofibular syndesmosis were repeatedly studied during multiple cadaver and clinical trials, however, no uniform recommendations were formulated at the present moment. The aim of the present review is to formulate the indications for the procedure of tibiofibular syndesmosis stabilization.
