The position of St. Theophan the recluse on the issue of translating the sacred scriptures into Russian

The author of this article studies the views of St. Theophan the Recluse on the topic of translating the Sacred Scriptures into Russian. His publications in the journals “Dushepolyeznoye Chteniye”, “Domashnyaya Beseda” and “Tserkovny Vyestnik” are analyzed. The hierarch’s opponents in this discussion were Pavel Ivanovich Gorsky-Platonov (1835-1904), Professor of Moscow Theological Academy and Ivan Stepanovich Yakimov (1847-1885), Professor of St. Petersburg Theological Academy. These discussions are an important chapter in the history of Russian biblical studies. This conference paper was given at the 7th Feofanovskiye Chteniya, which took place at St. Petersburg Theological Academy in September 2013.
