The article is an expanded version of the paper for the international Russian and Spanish conference “Narración y representación en la época de Cervantes”. The article is focused on rendering the polymetrical structure of the Spanish Golden Age drama in translation. The author analyzes the strophic structure of Calderón’s several comedies and its reflection in Konstantin Balmont’s translations (made in 1900-1919). The analysis shows how the Russian poet’s attention to the metric organization increased year after year. The shift of metrical equivalents over time clearly demonstrates the evolution of Balmont’s translation principles which was reflected in growing metrical diversity in translations. V. Polilova thinks that this mirrors general literary tendencies of the age in accordance with M.L. Gasparov’s conception.
