The article deals with the political and institutional characteristics of political stability in modern Russia in the context of modernization processes. Russia has not yet got rid of the consequences of the radical transformation of the sociopolitical and economic systems associated with the collapse of the USSR. Socioeconomic modernization should consist in improving the standard of living of the population, strengthening the institution of private property, the growth of civic consciousness. A serious problem of the Russian government is the low level of trust of citizens in the activities of state institutions, the belief that the government conducts "anti-people" socio-economic policy. In the context of a sharp decline in the standard of living, a sharp aggravation of socio-economic contradictions is likely. Economic weakness, subsidization and debt of the subjects of the Federation lead to a decrease in socio-economic and, consequently, political stability. The main political and institutional characteristics that influence the stabilization potential of the Russian political system are: the monocentric, personalistic nature of power, the dominance of the Executive over the legislative power, the merger of power and business, the shadow economy, the lack of public policy. Russia has developed an administrativebureaucratic model of governance based on electoral authoritarianism. The problem of political stability also has ideological content. Political and institutional parameters of political stability contain the prospect of unbalancing the political system.
