The article considers a number of episodes that occurred during the Second Opium War in China (1856-1860) between the head of the XIV Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Beijing, Archimandrite Guriy (Karpov) and the Commissioner of the Russian Empire in China, Nikolai Pavlovich Ignatiev. An attempt was made to analyze the relationship between the two diplomats, which, incl. led to the successful conclusion of the Russian-Chinese Beijing Treaty of 1860. The article also mentions N. N. Muravyov-Amursky and the commissioner and bailiff of the XIVth Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Pyotr Nikolaevich Perovsky.
