The article analyzes the category «wen», and its derivatives «wenhua» (culture) and «wenming» (civilization). The category «wen» is opposite to natural, and defined as something created by human. Also, «wen» is considered as ordering the society beginning. We discuss the ethical content of the category «wen», and note, on the one hand, the semantic closeness, and, on the other, the existing differences between the concepts of «culture» and «civilization» in Chinese philosophy. Culture is understood as a process of human activity and society transformation. The term «civilization» is defined as the results of this activity. In the article we pay a lot of attention to the trends in developing the spiritual culture of modern Chinese society, as well as the problems of modernizing the human, improving his powers and abilities, which are relevant to modern philosophy.
