The paper defines the notion of ‘core in modern psycholinguistic (associative) research; discusses different methods of allocation and structuring within the framework of Tver and the Moscow schools of psycholinguistics;outlines the perspectives and substantiates the heuristic value of the study of nuclear and peripheral zones of the mental lexicon in the aspect of intra - and inter-ethnic comparative studies.
