This article discusses various approaches to the issue of semiotization of poetry. The existing modern semiotic theories concerning art, literature and, in particular, poetry are structured and generalized. The experience of literature studies in the works of R. Barthes, Yu. Lotman, Tz. Todorov, U. Eco, R. Jacobson and other linguists is examined. The article also considers semiotic analysis of poetry, the existence of a special language of poetry, the specifics of literary discourse, the phenomenon of the poetic sign, including poetic signs in so-called “poetry of thought”. The leading role of language in semiotics as an “interpretant” of all other sign systems is indicated. On the basis of the presented theories, various types of poetic signs, as well as types of semiotization, are distinguished. Poetic signs are subdivided into signs-images (the method of embodying the author’s conceptual framework is semiotized, including objective and imaginary reality, with the use of various poetic means) and structural signs (the external form of the poem is semiotized; grammatical categories, syntactic constructions, rhyme, rhythmic pattern, etc. are regarded as signs). Semiotization is divided into complete semiotization (the text is considered a single sign) and partial semiotization (various signs are used). There is also semiotization with the loss of the denotation of the linguistic sign (in this case, the poetic sign absorbs the linguistic signs) and semiotization with partial preservation of the denotation of the linguistic sign.
