The paper examines the use of the terms “enhypostaton” and “enhypostatic substance” in the works of the Greek Chalcedonian theologians since the middle of VIth century - afer it was first introduced in the Chalcedonian Christology by Leontius of Byzantium - and till the middle of VIIIth century. Te author comes to the conclusion that in this period, except for a wide non terminological usage, in accordance with which the word ἐνυπόστατον could mean all that really exists, including accidents, the supporters of the Council of Chalcedon used the term “enhypostaton” to refer to 1) the nature (substance, species), realised in a distinct hypostasis and perceived in it; 2) the natures united with one another, existing and perceived in one common hypostasis. In addition to these two main values in such theologians as St. Anastasius of Antioch, St. Maximus the Confessor, and especially St. John of Damascus, one can specify another meaning: the nature (substance), accepted by the hypostasis of another genus, existing in it and having this hypostasis as its own.
