Meaning of the terms “perestroika”, “democratization” and “glasnost” in regional press 1985 - 1991

The article presents an attempt to find out what meaning Archangelsk and Vologda regional editions enclosed in the notions “perestroika”, “democratization” and “glasnost», how these new phenomena in social and political life of the country were lit in local papers. The survey covered 19 social and political Archangelsk and Vologda regional, municipal and district editions. The article contains quantitative and informative analysis of the publications and reveals semantic filling of the key notions. The author comes to the conclusion that the notions “perestroika”, “democratization” and “glasnost” regularly appeared in regional papers that time. Most regional issues associated “perestroika” with party methods and style change, party leaders’ personal responsibility raise, with the changes in the work of local Soviets of people’s deputies, total thinking and psychology reorganization. “Democracy” as a rule was used as a synonym of “perestroika” when covering local Soviets elections so as local Soviets function. “Glasnost” was usually considered as opinion plurality, criticism and self-criticism of party, economic and other organizations including mass media.
