The article covers terminology of the stated problem and analyzes its historical aspects. Dedicated study of military historical documents has given an idea of theoretical and practical activity of the Russian commanders, generals and officers aiming to prevent and overcome various deviations in behaviour of Russian soldiers during battles and wars.
