The article reviews the advantages of using portfolio technique for diagnostics and assessment of students'' progress in studies in a multilevel higher education system at a federal university. Methodology and structure of different types of portfolio for the students majoring in humanities and natural sciences are presented. The relevant professional aspects that may be assessed by the portfolio method are observed.
