Urban-type settlements in the post-Soviet transformation of urban settlement system in Transbaikalia and the Russian Far East

The article analyzes the results of post-Soviet transformation of urban settlement pattern in the Russian Far East and Transbaikalia regions in terms of urban-type settlements. The author demonstrates the changes in their total number, population and structure that resulted from their reorganization into rural settlements, complete elimination, or integration into cities. It is concluded that urban-type settlements are of great importance for assessing not only the statistical decline of the urban population of the macroregion, but also of the results and prospects of the urbanization process in the East of Russia.
