The article deals with a subject little studied in foreign and Russian historiography - Boshin War (1868-1869) and the phenomenon of the Republic of Ezo. In order to reveal the cause of the conflict and the circumstances in which the Republic emerged, the author turns to the analysis of the messages written by its leader, Enomoto Takeaki (1836-1908), and comes to the conclusion that his campaign on Ezo Island was mainly driven by the fear for the economic security of Tokugawa vassals.
