The article highlights the role of the intelligentsia in the South of Russia which consisted of school teachers, higher educational institution teachers, priests, the Cossack officers, musicians, actors, etc., who constituted a smaller part of all the Cossack population. The Cossack intellectuals from the times of their settlement on and the development of the Kuban region were the heralds and initiators of changes in the cultural life of the region. Special attention is paid to everyday life of teachers, their professional functions, their way of life and standard of living at the late 19th - early 20th century.
