V. A. Zhukovsky's late prose in censorship committees

In the article the history of 10 th vol. of Complete Works of Zhukovsky passing censoring procedure is considered on a basis of still unpublished archive materials. Zhukovsky was planning to include his religious-philosophical prose into that volume. At the end of June, 1850 he sent the manuscript of the 10 th vol. to Pletnev to forward it to censors. The manuscript was divided into 3 parts. The part that included the article «Russian and British Policy» was given to Grand Prince Alexander. The part with the religious articles was forwarded to Church censors. All the remaining materials were placed to 3 rd part and forwarded to St.-Petersburg Censorship committee which in its turn sent it to the Head Censoring Department. Shidlovsky, Serbinovich and Mitusov took the most active part. Final decision was made by L. Dubelt who, recognizing Zhukovsky's religious prose as highly valuable, regarded the topics described as being highly relevant and thus undesirable in accordance with the censoring policy of the end of Nicolay Tsar period. The article «Russian and British Policy» published abroad by permission of the Emperor was banned from being published in Russia. Church censorship also did not allow Zhukovsky's prose for publication. Therefore, 10 th vol. of Complete Works of Zhukovsky, in Zhukovsky’s own words, suffered ‘a censorial shipwreck’.
