The article investigates different definitions of the term "fire safety" in normative legal acts, regulations, scientific and technical literature. The author considers fire safety as a legal institution. Particular attention is drawn to the main sources of threat to public safety, to which the concept refers fires and natural disasters associated with natural hazards and fires. Hazards of fire, affecting people and property, enshrined in legislation and regulations in the field of fire safety are listed.
