The present paper examines the problem of security in Europe in the mid-twentieth century. In doing so, the role of the Soviet Union in the context of UN disarmament in the 1970s is brought up to date. The main directions of the USSR's foreign policy in the context of ensuring nuclear safety in Europe and the main tasks facing the states in the designated period are determined. The key problems faced by the world's actors in the process of international control over nuclear weapons are revealed. The actions taken by the Soviet Union in the direction of their solution and prevention of aggravation of the situation are analyzed. It is emphasized that the USSR was a supporter of peaceful diplomacy and oriented the international community toward the rejection of military confrontation as a way to resolve interstate conflicts, drawing the world's attention to the global threat arising from the use of the nuclear arsenal in any of its manifestations.
