The constant growth of humanity and technological development has resulted in an increased consumption of water, and because of its uneven distribution, over a billion people in the world have no access to clean water as a basic resource for a dignified life. The access to clean fresh water supplies is directly dependent on the effectiveness of the undertaken anti-pollution measures. The water pollution is one of the biggest problems of the biosphere, with great consequences for all living organisms including humans, whose actions have led to considerable changes in the physical-chemical changes of its structure. In this sense, the state of water resources in Republic of Serbia obviously requires making certain efforts in order to advance and improve the systems of protection of this significant natural resource, since the problem of pollution of both surface and groundwater is becoming more and more present. In Republic of Serbia, the field of waters is regulated by several laws, as well as a set of rules and regulations, of which the most important is the Law on Waters. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an analysis of the legal protection of waters in Republic of Serbia through determining the measures and tasks of protection, as well as the possibilities of the practical use and effects of protective measures.
