The article analyzes the historical experience and current status of Russian Orthodox missionary work in Mongolia. It was found out that throughout the Russian Orthodox Church's presence (ROC) in the country Christianization of traditionally Buddhist Mongolian population, entrenchment of Orthodoxy, identification with the local people and rooting in their country yielded poor results. At present, the Orthodox community in Mongolia is one of the smallest among all Christian confessions existing in the country. The author writes that the objective reality of the ROC activities is a religious component, consisting in the nourishment of the Russian-speaking population in the conditions of residence outside the borders of Russian confessional space. The authors expose shortcomings in the model of the state-church relations in modern Mongolia.
