This paper considers the impact of Russian political traditions on the legal literacy in Russian society. Attention has been drawn to authoritarianism and paternalism of the State as features inherent to Russian society, and priority of informal rules over formal legal acts. The study emphasizes that the development of legal literacy is directly related to development of social capital and democratization of Russian society.
