The study discusses the needs and their impact on the personal activities. The necessity of research and forecasting the needs of youth as the most dynamic social community in the design and creation of goods and services for socially meaningful filling of the objective content of needs is shown. The results of a study of the needs of students in the city of Lipetsk are presented. It has been revealed that a large share of the youth’s income is spent on the needs associated with providing the material basis of life and restoring energy costs. The significance of the criteria for choosing goods (utility, reliability, aesthetics, multitasking, profitability, product safety) for young people is determined. An analysis of the unmet demand of young people is carried out and the goods for which the accumulation of funds most often occurs are identified.
