Articles of interior in artistic text: chair

Бесплатный доступ

The article discusses the ways of augmenting semantics that endow a real object - a chair - with symbolic, archetypal and mythological connotations. Ambiguous semantics of a chair develops into a concept the character of which was revealed at the turn of the XXth century, when interpreting the established meanings and playing with them started prevailing over depicting. A chair, as well as other interior features, ceases to be only a part of the environment or way of demonstrating social characteristics. The uniqueness of a chair as a place to seat only one person (a place for sole sitting) provides elimination of the one sitting from the life. An empty chair means complete absence of a man; objects lying on the chair symbolize irreversibility. Likening a chair to a man turns the man into an object, and extremely nondurable at that. Any combination of a chair with either a bed or a mirror, or placing a chair into the corner emphasizes the motifs of fragility and mortality.
