The article examines the historical background, the current state and prospects of the revival of hemp breeding in Russia. The author notes the decline of the once leading industry, attributing it to the inability to adapt to market conditions after the collapse of the administrative and command system. A comparative analysis of two modern global development models is carried out: the high-tech but insufficiently flexible "Western" path (USA, Canada, EU) and the laborintensive "eastern" (China, Central Asia), preserving the features of the Soviet school. A common "weak link" for both models has been identified — dependence on stationary plants for primary processing of raw materials (hemp stands).
