Basing on the existing experience of the mathematics teachers' training in a higher vocational education conditions, the article reveals the problems of improvement of the Masters' training and outlines the prospects of their resolution. The authors ground the inclusion of the range of subjects supporting the formation of the key competences into the curriculum of the MA course 050100 “Teachers' training" (program “Theory and methodology of mathematics teaching"). The article analyzes the problems of organization of independent and research work of undergraduates, considers the specifics of a Master's thesis on the theory and methodology of mathematics teaching. The experience of organization of a research workshop concerning the problems of theory and methodology of mathematics teaching in a high school and a university is described.
