This article analyzes the role of entrepreneurial universities as drivers of socio-economic and scientific-technological development. An entrepreneurial university is viewed as an institutional model that implements the third mission – the transfer of knowledge and technology to the real sector of the economy. The study describes the mechanisms for generating and transferring three key types of capital: human, intellectual, and entrepreneurial. It substantiates the need to create a favorable educational environment that includes organizational and cultural components, as well as the importance of public-private interaction and international cooperation. Organizational barriers and institutional contradictions accompanying the transformation of an educational organization into an entrepreneurial university are identified. Special attention is paid to the influence of globalization, the peculiarities of commercializing research results, and the problems of legitimizing entrepreneurial activity within the academic community. The article includes recommendations for improving the effectiveness of the implementation of the third mission of universities.
