Music school education as a resource for life strategies of the modern Russian family

The study discusses the pre-professional music education, the role and place of education in children’s music school in the projects of life and life strategies of the modern Russian family. By means of P. Bourdieu’s theory of capital, the research reviews the children’s music school as a means of social mobility, a source of symbolic and cultural capital, an approach to keeping and improving the social status of the family and the child. The study presents the statistical analysis data in relation to the social status of the parents. It examines the compliance of this type of education with values of modern parents, the specific nature of cultural capital development in this branch of education, and the students’ cultural differentiation originated from the social one. The author tests the hypotheses about the expectations of parents whose children study at music schools. The research findings may be useful in further theoretical study of the institution of music education and devising strategies for managing music schools.
