Teaching literature: practices of the Russian school back in history

The paper examined an initial period of systemic provision with learning techniques’ for the subject ‘letters’ in the Russian college. In the middle of XIX century, the higher school was allowed to set goals specific for teaching literature. The ‘Guidelines for teachers of Russian language and letters in colleges’ (1852) were published where teaching letters in colleges was considered as a complete framework; and studying literature was claimed to aim at humanistic and socio-cultural adaptation of a pupil.
