The causes, course and outcomes of Turukhansk riot of 1908-1909

The article reviews the crimes committed by political refugees exiled in the Turukhansk Territory of the Yeniseysk province in December of 1908. It describes climate and social features of the Turukhansk Territory as a location for exile (there was a great number of administrative and political exiled prisoners). Based on archives, for the first time, the authors reconstructed the rebellious and police actions in detail. The article analyzes the prerequisites for the rebellion and the causes of its protracted nature. It describes the peculiarities of administrative and police control of Eastern Siberia in the early 20th century. In this period the police were divided into parts, the Special Corps of Gendarmes was reduced, the security posts were abolished. To suppress the prison riot, the authorities had to seek help from the military units located in the Yeniseysk province. The study describes the measures taken by the interim Governor-General of the Turukhansk Territory V.O. Trofimov to stabilize the situation and improve the efficiency of the police. The presented view on this event will be interesting for specialists from the standpoint of history, political science and law.
