The purpose of the study is to clarify the techniques in optimizing the limit values of diagnostic parameters. Methods. The main studies and regulatory documents have been analyzed, they are compared with the practice of the technical service of the machine and tractor fleet of the agroindustrial complex. Results. Optimization of standards of diagnostic parameters is dominated by optimization of permissible values, but not controlling reliability. The main technique is technical and economic to minimize direct and indirect unit costs and costs for technical services. It was widely used by Prof. Mikhlin V.M. But his specifics of specifying the permissible parameters are not correct, time-consuming and not implemented in practice. And the justification of the limiting values, the only governing ones, is insufficient. But the "new strategy" of the technical service aggravates: in it, the optimization of permissible values taking into account the wear rates of parts allegedly reduces the probability of failures by 3.5-5 times? It is proposed to divide the methods of optimizing the limiting values of diagnostic parameters according to their functionality, the sphere of optimization: manufacturers, consumers, control services. Conclusion. Operational techniques are needed to optimize the norms of the technical service. So it is possible to determine the limit values according to accounting data from the condition of achieving expenses for technical services and from crop losses in case of equipment failure to the cost of a similar object.
