The article is devoted to the role of federalism in modern society, its importance in the state structure. The author analyzes the main aspects of understanding the phenomenon of the federalism as principle. Moreover, the author examines relation between federalism and federation. The author speculates about federalism as a legal principle of the state power organization. In author's opinion, this principle is demonstrated in different ways within specific historical forms of territorial state structure.
