The information need principle in the context of handling the problem of the English language popularization in Russia

The article is devoted to studying the problem of low English proficiency in Russia and finding ways to deal with it. The urgency of the problem of the English language popularization stems from worldwide trends towards the increasing cross-cultural interaction characteristic of the globalization era. The period of schooling is treated as a milestone in language learning, therefore special attention is paid to consideration of the problems within the school system of teaching English. As the results of the analysis showed, these problems are bound to reduce students’ motivation, and there emerges the necessity to affect it intentionally. The proposed methods for promoting motivation are based on the statement that human activity is regulated by needs. One of the needs that induces human learning activity is identified to be the information need. The information need principle dealt with in the article is focused on developing an effective system of teaching English through providing and maintaining students' motivation, which, hereafter, is to contribute to overcoming the problem of low English proficiency in Russia.
