Echinococcal cyst of the liver is a round, dense neoplasm in the liver, localized most often in the right lobe, where the branches of the portal vein are more developed. The disease is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. The echinococcal bladder, as it grows, leads to atrophy of healthy tissues, to stagnation in the blood vessels and bile capillaries. The only effective way to get rid of an echinococcal cyst is surgery. The neoplasm is excised together with the fibrous membrane. After removal of the cyst, germicides (sodium chloride solution or glycerin) are injected into the cavity in its place. Inabout 7% ofcases, repeatedechinococcalformationsoccur.
