The article discusses the problem of nature and character of common knowledge. With that aim in view, the interaction of culture and cognition are specified, the principal dimensions of cultural knowledge are identified. A comparative study of association fields serves as a basis for identifying the cognitive structure and cognitive strategies employed in the processing of information in the sphere of every day life by Russian and French people
