The article raises the issue of the status of the Kurdish population of Turkey in the context of Ankara's state policy towards national minorities. For this purpose, the authors examine the historical context of the development of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict and the subsequent obstacles to the integration of Kurds into Turkish society. The paper analyzes information about the position of the parties to the conflict in the context of the scope of rights that should or can be granted to the Kurds. The authors examine the current state of the situation of the Kurds and attempts made by the authorities to resolve the conflict, primarily within the country. They pay a considerable attention to comparing the approaches of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the main opposition force, the Republican People's Party (CHP) to resolving the conflict with the Kurds in the context of the importance of the latter from an electoral point of view.
