The article is devoted to the problem of «relapse into illiteracy» among the adult population of the yeniseysk governorate in the 1920s. Using archival materials and regional periodical press, the author analyzes the causes of this phenomenon and the ways to overcome it as they were seen by the representatives of local authorities and the teaching community.
