The Problem of Saving Ancient Monastic Traditions in Modern Times

The article is devoted to the problem of saving ancient monastic traditions in the conditions of modern life, modern civilization and scientific and technological progress. The article examines the difficulties faced by monks in the modern world, with special attention paid to novices and young monks who are just beginning their journey in monasteries. Studied are the modern problems of life of the monasteries. The article is based on the materials of the round table “Ancient monastic traditions in modern times”, which was held at the Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra on January 21, 2019. The article is a revised version of the report presented at the III Scientific and Theological Monastic Conference organized by the Historical Society of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and held on April 4, 2019 in the “Book lounge” of the Academy.
