The problem of accent in the XVI century Portuguese (on the basis of F. de Oliveira's works)

This article discusses the question of accent in the 16th-century Portuguese. The source of this investigation is the first Portuguese grammar written by Fernao de Oliveira (1536). The author of the article also uses other F. de Oliveira’s works to select data on the problem of accent in Portuguese, such as «Sea warfare» (1555), «Voyage of Fernao de Magalhaes» (1555), «Book on Shipbuilding» (1580). The article presents an attempts to analyse the accent definitions, to determinate the accent’s place, to explain exceptions on the basis of data from hictorical phonetics and etymology.
