The problems of the Caspian region's security and Iran's position

The article considers the problems of the settlement of the five Caspian littoral states' mutual relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Paradoxically enough, it appeared that for the Russian Federation, the successor of the USSR, division of the Caspian area of water and sea shelf with the Islamic Republic of Iran came to be much easier than that with the former republics of the USSR. The main reason for disagreements among “all five” is rich reserves of hydrocarbons in the Caspian region. They are striving for a tasty morsel of the Caspian territory and when there is a lack of weighty arguments in somebody's favour the partners attempt to threatening and instigate military actions. Taking this into consideration, the military forces of some Caspian littoral states appeal to the USA and its allies to get military-technical aid to supply armies with modern military equipment and to train special personnel for the emergency measures. The background of the Iranian position in the sphere of safeguarding of security to some extent looks by contrast with the other members of “Caspian five”. First, IRI is under the sanctions which were imposed by the USA and some of its European allies on account of Iranian “obstinacy” in connection to the nuclear problem. Second, because Iran feels a permanent military threat of America and the Western countries that implemented sanctions against Russia as well, Tehran hopes to incline Moscow to sharing the same views.
