Problems and perspectives of the ethnographic, historical, and anthropological research of Chukchi trade, barter, and gift exchange

The paper considers problems and perspectives of the ethnographical, historical, and anthropological research of Chukchi trade, barter, and gift exchange. It briefly describes the history of studying those phenomena in the indigenous population of Chukotka and concludes that there is a need for the comprehensive research basing upon approaches that have never been used in the Russian science before. The author analyses the works which in a varying degree describe the phenomena of barter, gift exchange, and trade and their contents in culture, and emphasizes urgency of the further study of these phenomena in the modern society with application of ethnographic and anthropologic instruments.
