Equivalence problems in translation research

Equivalence is one of the most controversial and challenging topics in translation research. It is the equivalence that crucial in rendering linguistic realities or culturally-bound terms. The article discusses approaches of domestic and foreign linguists to the equivalence. There are many reasons why elements of a language can be difficult to translate. The first obstacle concerns the differences in the so-called linguistic world view, or the ways of reflecting objective reality in different languages. The second obstacle is related to translation of linguistic realities or cultural untranslatability. The authors give examples of terms that are intended to describe linguistic realities by different authors. The particular choice of a term depends on the scope of the concept under consideration. The authors also mention different types of equivalence and reasons that affect the adequacy of translation.
