The relevance of the presented study is due to the fact that constant and active changes in economic conditions have led to the emergence of a more modern approach to the assessment and use of human resources. The result of this changed approach and the new economic system was the emergence of the concept of "competence". This is quite relevant for forensic experts, whose competence has a complex structure, and its definition acts as an objective necessity. In this regard, this article considers the features of the competence of forensic experts and ways to optimize the process aimed at establishing it. As a result of the study, it was found that the competence of forensic experts is quite important for conducting expert research and making a fair and legal decision on the case. However, in our country there are certain difficulties in certifying forensic experts, including those working in non-governmental forensic institutions. To solve these problems, it was proposed to conduct their certification in the State Forensic University or in certification centers at specialized universities. It was also proposed to implement the experience of foreign countries in this area, since in a number of countries additional procedures are carried out to assess the competence of an expert, for example, cross-examination.
