In this paper, the author attempts to rehabilitate Marxist materialism as a methodological approach, which on the wave of the global crisis of 2008 draws the attention of a number of prominent foreign researchers focused on revealing metaphysics of ongoing transformations. By insisting on the need to maintain continuity including the period of socialism, the author states that Marxism as an ideology and the nationalized Soviet project of nomenclature capitalism can not be compared with the methodology of scientific research of sources of ongoing phenomena, processes and facts and we must not substitute one for another, shifting critical emphasis in the negative form of discussion. The author analyzes leading scientific theorists’ views, Marxist and neo-Marxist ideas, policy documents, party leaders’ statements and reports of the late Soviet era and evolutionary background to the understanding of the need to implement the rule-of-law state concept in the Soviet Union from cautious statements to full adoption on the official level. The author thinks that linear simple external descriptive models are unproductive in the analysis of seemingly insurmountable difficulties in the way to run the Russian rule-of-law state model, therefore according to the author rational neo-Marxist materialist explanations are the most adequate to modern reality. The author directly or indirectly links all these problems to the question of state sovereignty.
