Education of indigenous peoples in XVIIth century Canada

The article analyzes the problems of education of indigenous peoples in Canada, which was a part of 17th century New France. French Catholic Church (Franciscans, Jesuits and Ursulines) was deeply engaged in educational activities in an effort to Christianize the Indians of Canada with the support of the French monarchy. The author gives a detailed description of the missionary educational initiatives and tries to explain the failure of Europeans to Christianize the Indians.
