The native language preservation problems of the indigenous peoples of the north (a case of Magadan region)

The preservation of the traditional culture of the indigenous peoples of the North is a topical and multifaceted challenge faced by the state and society. The conservation and development of ethnic languages of indigenous peoples serve as the crucial component of preserving and transmitting the traditional culture. There are different problems in this regard which determine the relevance of the study. The authors look at the common issues of defining ‘native language’ in the Russian legislation and the challenges of implementing the regional laws and regulations on the survival of indigenous languages. The study provides a brief historical analysis of the practice of preserving the ethnic languages of the indigenous minorities in Magadan region. The research includes a statistical analysis of the native language skills among the indigenous peoples of the North and the native language teaching situation in Magadan region. The authors note a set of problems of the native language preservation and its legal regulation. It is concluded that it is necessary to apply an integrated approach to solving the problems of conserving native languages and developing the language environment.
