Problems of urban environment in the Vologda Region large cities

According to Decree of the President of the Russian Federation 309, dated 05/07/2024 “On the National Development Goals of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030 and for the future up to 2036”, improving the quality of the living environment is one of the national goals. At the same time, the majority of the country's population (75%) lives in cities. Today, it is the large cities that are the migration centers, the place of concentration of various resources. In the Vologda Region, 55% of the region's population lives in large cities (Vologda, Cherepovets). Providing the population with the necessary infrastructure, creating and beautifying common spaces is a prerequisite for creating an attractive city to live in. In this regard, it is relevant to study the problems of the urban environment of large cities in the Vologda Region, which also reflects the purpose of our article. Vologda Research Center conducts annual monitoring of the living conditions of the population of Vologda and Cherepovets. An analysis of the results of the survey conducted in 2025 revealed a number of problems (in particular, in the field of road, housing and communal services, etc.). Especially the population of large cities is concerned about the unsatisfactory condition of courtyards; drinking water quality; poor condition of sidewalks, roads, etc. Currently, the authorities are implementing projects and programs aimed at improving the quality of the urban environment. Nevertheless, the survey results indicate that the proportion of negative assessments of living conditions is increasing. The results of the conducted research can be useful to public authorities in the development of projects aimed at improving the city and allowing them to pay attention to the most acute problems of concern to residents of Vologda and Cherepovets.
