In this article, using the example of the Ak-Tyuz mining complex, the environmental problems that have arisen as a result of the activities of enterprises in the mining sector of the economy of the Kyrgyz Republic are considered. Industrial waste disposal poses a serious threat of radioactive and chemical pollution of the environment not only on a national but also on a transboundary scale. Hazardous waste and the rising costs of its recycling have confronted everyone with the choice of making decisions related to reduction, recycling, and the creation of new management methods. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current state of tailings dumps at the Ak-Tyuz mining complex and develop recommendations for creating and improving a system for sustainable management of hazardous waste for government agencies, local governments and environmental protection organizations. In Kyrgyzstan, the solution to this problem largely depends on the institutional environment, waste management policy mechanisms, and a multi-level management system. For this, the institutional environment and the choice of the right strategy are important, which would meet, fi rst of all, the national interests of minimizing risks to human health and the environment. Despite the measures taken during the years of Kyrgyzstan’s independence, within the framework of various international projects and government programs, the problem of tailings dumps continues to be acute. The authors of this article conclude that hazardous waste can be effectively managed, and suggest ways out of the current crisis situation.
