The article analyzes the reasons and causes of death among the urban population of Western Siberia in the 1960s. In this period, the growth in average life expectancy in the country and in Western Siberia slowed down, and even decreased in the second half of the decade. Thus, this period is of particular interest for historians, ethnologists, and sociologists studying the dynamics of population size in Siberia in the second half of the 20th century. The prevailing point of view in the current academic literature is that the first epidemiological transition had come to an end by the mid 1960s in Russia. The article identifies the specific features of this process in the urban settlements of Western Siberia taking into consideration its social, economic and cultural aspects.
