The authors of the present study propose the concept of separating the terms “managing projects” and “project management”. There is made an attempt to draw a distinction between the given terms and provide a new vision of the problem. Currently, there are several traditional approaches to management - system, process, and situational. The project approach, which has been developed relatively recently, is becoming popular not only in organizations dealing with software development, but also in various other fields. The authors of the study define "project management" as a new approach to management as science, as management of organization regardless of an object of management. Whereas managing projects is considered as oriented to a project as an object of management. The study provides information about the background for developing a project approach. There is given the authors’ definition of the term “project management”, there are proposed main aspects of project management in an organization. The study presents the typology of project organizations and their specific features. There is proposed an interpretation of the term "quasi-functionality" in the framework of project activities. The present study will be of interest to those who are interested in project management and its implementation at enterprises, as well as to modern top managers.
